On Saturday May 25, 2019 for the first time in Poland and only the second time in Europe, a coin grading class based on NGC grading standards was held. The seminar was jointly hosted by the Michigan based PANS and PTN of Warsaw, Poland.
The nine students now are the core of modern coin grading, conservation and storage knowledge in Poland and they will be sharing what they learned in their local organizations.
The lead instructor was ANA past president Bob Campbell from Salt Lake City, Utah who was named an NGC Numismatic Ambassador in honor of the occasion.
Supporting Bob as assistant instructors were PANS president Lester Rosik that also acted as the Polish Translator, CSNS vice president and PANS treasurer Brett Irick and PANS past Secretary Joe Beaupied. The students included PTN president Przemysław Ziemba and PTN Treasurer Szymon Bereska.
According to PANS president Les Rosik, “the seminar idea came from a 2016 discussion with Szymon Bereska about modern coin grading standards on the 1-70 Sheldon scale that was held in the back room of a Warsaw coin dealer during a ten-day numismatic tour of Poland.”
In Poland, the traditional 1-5 grading scale is still used that has large steps between grades that can make coins hard to value or compare without viewing in person. PANS and PTN worked together to organize the event that financial support from PANS and PTN.
PANS founding member, Les Rosik, also noted that when the PANS society was formed in 1981 “we wrote into our constitution that we would support the development of Numismatics in Poland.” And, that “nearly forty years of hard work were required to develop our 100+ table semi-annual international and regional coin shows in Troy, Michigan, USA. And, that these shows generated the money that made this and future events with the PTN possible.”
